Dupla laterite is proven to be good. There are two forms: Duplarit-G is a
powder you mix into the gravel when first setting a tank up (read the
instructions!) and Duplarit-K is small balls you can place around the base of
plants in an established tank. I think of "-G" as "Granular" and "-K" as
"Klumps" to help remember which is which.
You need about 500 grams of Duplarit-G per 50 gallons, about $25. Yes, it's
expensive dirt but it works very well.
Daleco Master Breeder Products carries this and the rest of the Dupla line. I
think Pet Warehouse may still carry the laterite and a few other Dupla items.
