Dupla laterite is proven to be good.  There are two forms: Duplarit-G is a 
powder you mix into the gravel when first setting a tank up (read the 
instructions!) and Duplarit-K is small balls you can place around the base of 
plants in an established tank.  I think of "-G" as "Granular" and "-K" as 
"Klumps" to help remember which is which. 

You need about 500 grams of Duplarit-G per 50 gallons, about $25.  Yes, it's 
expensive dirt but it works very well.

Daleco Master Breeder Products carries this and the rest of the Dupla line. I 
think Pet Warehouse may still carry the laterite and a few other Dupla items.
