I've seen that but it's not magic or anything -- just a pictorial way
of doing proportions. Simply stated, if you have a gallon of water
with 20 degrees of hardness and you combine it with a gallon of water
with 0 degrees of hardness, you have two gallons of water with 10
degrees of hardness.
