The bunch in the pot was dense because the runners were forced to circle
around in the very limited area of the pot.  In your tank they are now
spreading out in all directions.  The growth will eventually get dense in
your tank as more and more runners are produced and they cross each other
and fill in the empty spaces.  Just give the plants more time.
