Hey Dave, sounds like some washed out and bleached variety of the Volvocales
(Chlorophyta), maybe Uroglena or Volvox itself. Have you a field scope or
even a higher power loupe? Any flagella on the outer cells? How hollow are
the balls? Give a glance to your G.W. Prescott (The FW Algae) for a rundown
through the dichotomous key to which genus/species this might be.... No, I
didn't think to add a Hale-Bopp spiel, sheesh.
