Re: Surface film

Fellow enthusiasts

A short time ago there was a post re: surface film. I read that
this was caused by an excess of protein in the water most likely
due to overfeeding. 
Does anyone else have any experience or thoughts on this?  I
would think that a surface film would be oil-based in
composition. Perhaps excess fats (lipids) due to overfeeding? 
Is this condition what protein skimmers are for?
Just curious.
