According to Kasselmann, A. m. is found mainly in fast, _permanently_
flowing creeks and rivers. During the rainy season, these rivers apparently
carry alot of debris and mud which limits the light intensity. Contrary to
the *old* belief, A.m. becomes dormant during this, the rainy season.
During the dry season, however, the water level drops, the water runs clear
again and the light levels at the plant increase considerably. A.m. then
comes out of its dormancy.
Obviously, the changing water level "stimulus"cannot be implemented in an
aquarium to any extend, however, limiting the light with floating cushions
of ricca, for example, is possible. The plants may also respond to seasonal
fertilization: instead of feeding them on a constant level throughout the
year, it may be useful to fertilize them only periodically.
In my review of the APD and personal correspondance, I noticed that
apparently neglected plants were doing much better than those in "managed"
tanks. Perhaps the seasonal fertilization and inconsistent light levels
play a role here.
Tim also wondered whether he should put the bulbs into a cold basement.
Since the plants come from permanent waters, they should not be taken out
of water, but could be removed from a relatively warm tropical tank into a
dark, cooler tank to simulate the rainy season.
Does anybody know if the bulbs take up nutrients during their dormany to
give the plant additional resources for the next growth period?
