Research in the lab under controlled conditions has shown that rooted 
aquatic plants prefer ammonia. In fact, they will remove ammonia 
preferentially, even when the nitrate concentration exceeds the ammonia 
concentration by a considerable margin.
The reason for this is probably that most aquatic plants are rooted in 
anaerobic sediments where ammonia predominates.
