The symbiotic relationship is not between higher plants and bacteria but
between the plant and a fungi ... very often a Vesicular Arbuscular
Mycorhyza which actually enters the host cell. There have been about half
a dozen research papers published that have reported these symbioses in
a wide variety of aquatic plants.
As to your mothers orchids ... this is an illegal practice in many areas
and for many species of orchids ... please do not dig up wild orchids as
they likely wont survive and many are endangered species as it is.
