bubbles in silicon

Aquatic Plant Enthusiasts,

This isn't directly related to plants but seeing that this is the most
friendly and helpful group I'll ask anyway.
This morning I noticed that the silicon joining the side panels of glass
together has bubbles in it. Some bubbles are about 1mm but others are up to 3mm.
When you run your finger down the silicon you can clearly feel the bumps in it.
The bubbles were not there when I bought the tank but a few have been there
for a few months. I only noticed there were heaps this morning.

What is this?

The tank was setup for freshwater 2 years ago and was brand new when first
set up. It has never been emptyed less than about 50% full (water changes).
And most of the bubbles are fairly low down with only small ones high up.

Thanks in advance
Trent
