Sorry George, your grad student gets a failing grade. Laterite is a highly weathered clay alright but does NOT contain significant amounts of Ca, Mg, K etc. As leaching occurs over time, these ions are replaced by Fe and Al and this is almost all that 'laterites' do contain. They are high in Fe and Al, thats it! dave.
