Lighting - report from a recent ANGFA meeting

Greetings all,

At the last ANGFA(NSW) meeting (the wednesday just gone), we were fortunate
enough to get the Australian representatives of the Fusion lamp to give us a talk
on the fusion lamp together with some other new types of lamp just becoming
available for aquarium lighting.

The Fusion lamp was definately impressive (the bulb itself constantly rotates
while on, to get good mixing of the sulphur throughout the bulb), when they
turned it on (extremely bright), looking at the ceiling of the meeting room,
the flourescents looked pink. The fusion lamp according to the spectral
distribution is the closest thing to a real sun that I have ever seen.

 - but currently its much to big for hobbiest sized aquariums. Although,
we meet at Sydney Aquarium and the aquarium was interested in it for
some of their larger aquariums.

A new low voltage dichroic halogen lamp was introduced, that produces a
daylight output - 4700K CRI 79, which was presented in a bank of other
low voltage dichroics, the commonly available dichroic is 3200K. The new
daylight certainly looked great, and I will be testing some of these over a
plant tank in the next two weeks. When I get more info on this I will pass
it onto the group.

A new metal halide was also presented - it is approx. the same size as
a low voltage dichroic lamp, is 50W and produces 5200K CRI 83. The
size of this lamp would make it suitable for tanks that could not have
fitted a metal halide before.

They also presented a device called Light Pipe - as seen in the Fusion
lighting info, but is also suitable for this new metal halide, (comes in
diameters of 2 inches upwards)

Lastly they showed a standard double ended metal halide, but with a
colour temperature of 10000K, alot of blue, full daylight, more suitable
for coral systems, but impressive all the same.
