I found that having someone custom-make my hood was cheaper than any
commercial hood.

All you really need is a box the size of your tank top. Make the box out of
wood or ABS plastic. Turn it upside down. Attach standard fluorescent end
caps to the inside of the box with glue, screws, or even velcro. Wire them
and leave the ballast outside the box. You'll find the box and lamps weigh
very little. By putting the ballast outside, you reduce the heat under the
"hood."
