Alum, which contains aluminum, is toxic to algae and aquatic plants. It 
is not a nutrient effect but is caused by the toxicity of aluminum 
itself.It is often used in place of copper sulfate in part because it 
dissolves more slowly and therefore lasts longer. Aluminum is also toxic 
to fish so it is not an appropriate product for use in an aquarium.
