Smaller CFLs

Your commercial lighting store can come to the rescue again! Recently,
there have been a few messages about using compact fluorescents (CFLs)
under a hood with the caveat that the base of these fluorescents--which
contains the ballast--is pretty wide.

There are smaller, slimmer compact fluorescents available but they are not
in wide distribution in the retail channels. Check out a commercial
lighting store for them. Our local utility is trying to encourage
manufacturers to distribute in retail stores because the ones commonly
available don't even fit most home lighting fixtures--not to mention
standard aquarium hoods.
