Lotus seed

I am new to this list, and have a 700 gallon garden pond. I am courious 
about all aquatic vegetation.
Does any have any experience with starting American Lotus from seed ? I 
just received a couple dozen. Their seed coat is wicked hard. I am 
wondering if I should "nick" the coating, but how to plant?
