It looks like I was unclear in my original post; sorry for that.

There are no fish in this tank nor have there been.  I haven't tried to 
cycle it artifically either.  Just water treated with Fritzgard and some 
Fritzyme, driftwood, coconut shells and plants.  

I'll be pulling the shells and wood to test them individually; thanks to 
Greg Tong for making that suggestion.  :)
