Re: [APD] Aquatic-Plants Digest, Vol 98, Issue 4

Hi Vadiraj,

This dust you're referring to. Is it algae? If so- what kind of lights are you using? Are the bulbs old? I've read countless times that most plants like at least 1watt per gallon of water. So if you had a 55gallon tank, you'll want at least 55watts of light. A lot of plants require more light than that. It's all dependent on the species in your aquarium. Do you have a lot of circulation in your tank? The more your leaves sway around in circulation, the less change algae will get the opportunity to form on your leaves. I've added a powerhead to my 55 to solve this problem...but I do not recommend using a powerhead if you have moss or floating plants in your tank without some clever finangaling (adjusting).

Hi All,

Its been 3 months that I started off with this passion and its going
well. Off late, there is lot of dust that has accumulated on the
leaves and looks very dirty.
How do I get rid of that?

Easy thing would be to trim them to get fresh leaves but, I see the
dust keep getting back some how. I have put moss on a drift wood even
thats got too much dust.
I don't know how to solve that.
How do I get rid of it?

I started with small one and bought a big one now, but this dust is
disappointing me.

In my tank

Co2: 1 bubbles per 2 seconds.
ADA's Amazonia substrate
Inner filter with BIO RIO
Do Aqua's be green fertilizer, 1 cap per week when water refill.
Tank size is: 45x25x25
Water capacity would 10 gallons.

Fishes: Shrimps, neon tetras, rainbow tetras, mountain minow,
5 hours of lighting every day.

Thanks,
Vadiraj

I am not sure what you mean by dust. Is this just sediment from the bottom which could be easily washed off or is the "dust" actually attached to the leaves and can not be washed free.

Also, how is rapid is your plant growth.

I have heard (and seen) calcium deposits on the leaves of rapidly growing plants. The plants abstract their needed carbon from dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonate, leaving behind the calcium and magnesium mineral deposits. This is a typical mechanism for valesnaria but I am not too sure this would affect the more slowly growing moss.

I think Vadiraj is talking about this (diatoms):
