Actually it's the email software that converts your 7bit email text into 
8bits by converting it from the 3 characters into a single MIME character. 
ie your last 3 characters are sent across the Internet as "=E2=98=BA".

ie 9 characters of 7bit.

No wonder the Internet is getting slower.
