For getting plants to stick to whichever wood you end up getting, I find
cheap fishing line works great ($2 for a huge spool).  Easy to tie things
down and is almost invisible and doesn't break down and pollute the water.
Easy to take off once they have taken hold.  Wood sticking plants (java
moss/fern etc.) can stick to even smooth wood given time.   If you have some
algae eating fish, you might find your wood getting polished down smooth
over time with some fish being much more aggressive than others. Bristlenose
Pleco is a mini band sander.
