Re: [APD] Aquatic-Plants Digest, Vol 55, Issue 6

Hmmm. Yes, I've asked them, and they don't know what type bark it is or much
of anything about it. I'm inquiring whether anyone here has any experience
with this type of thing.

Thanks,
Mary

Hi,
Yesterday I was given 4 aquatic plants that were about to be tossed at my
local Walmart.

I brought them home and placed them in my 10 gallon hospital tank with
bright light leaving them in their pots until later when they can be
properly planted in my 55 gallon tank.

This morning when I turned the lights on I found a few tiny round worms
swimming with a "figure 8" motion through the water, and some tiny flatworms
cruising along the glass.
I removed them with a siphon and flushed them immediately.
Are they anything I needed to worry about?
Thanks,
Dan ~ Va

Some online vendors are offering tree bark for aquarium use. Has anyone
tried it? I think it would be magic as a substrate for cling-ons like Javas
and Anubias. Any idea what kind of tree bark is used? Is it safe?

TIA,
Mary Sweeney

Hi I'm Dan in Virginia, (Just south of Richmond)

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your group!

I'm brand new to aquarium plants, and the whole aqua plant culture.(I've
always had those dredfully ugly plastic ones!)

I've always had great success with aquarium fish, (both fresh, and salt
water fish), and terresteral plants seperately. (mainly orchids, and African
Violets).

But, after developing a debillatating allergy to soil born mold and mildew,
I unfortunately and reluctently had to put an end to my terrestial plant
hobby for now.

So....! why not try my hand at planted aquariums?!?
I have a 55, a 35, and a 20 gallon aquarium I hope to plant up soon.

So much to learn first! and excited about it!
I hope to learn a lot from you all!

So, Where do I begin?

Thanks again!
Dan ~ va

Why not buy a good book? I'd recommend the Walstad book -

http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Walstad

Truly an excellent book.
Diana Walstad, author of the book 'ECOLOGY of the PLANTED AQUARIUM - A
Practical Manual and Scientific Treatise for the Home Aquarist'.

PMDD - Poor Man's Dosing Drops
http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/PMDD
is another reference on feeding plants you'll come across

Another is :
EI - Estimated Index
http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/EI
This link will be a jumping board into the Barr Report web site. An
excellent plant keepers forum.

At 01:57 PM 3/7/08 -0600, you wrote:

Get an saquarium, although several are way more fun.

Get a bunch of stuff to putt in the bottom. You can get designer fancy
sediment for the price of cavier or you can use what's lying on the side of
the road pretty much as well.

I stick manure under fine beach sand taken from, well, a fine ebach near
here. You need to let it soak in water for a week or two first. Some people
use leaf mould if you'll be growing hard to keep crypts. Some people add
clay - it all helps but not one makes an overwhemling difference.

Order some chemicals to make fertilziers tonight. You'll neet potassium
nitrate, Potassium monophosphate, and iron+trace mix and Magnesium suphate
(epsom salts).

(I pretty much ignore the potassium suphate in the recipes, the amount of
potassium you're adding here is so minor it's not worth doing, there's lots
in the other chemicals)

Now you neex lights. Anything fluorescent will work for some definition of
"work".

You WILL want CO2. You could start by experimenting with the yeast
concoctions or you could go straight to the bottled gas.

Now you just need plants, rocks a dsriftwood.

I usually use flourish excel in a new tank just to keep algae away till the
plants get established.

That should do for a start.

While we are on the topic of books

The Simple Guide to Planted Aquariums by Terry Barber and Rhonda Wilson.

http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Guide-Planted-Aquariums/dp/0793821177/ref=pd_bb
s_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1204940136&sr=8-1

Use EI method for fertilizing.............not in the book. Enjoy your new
aquarium

Is it safe?

Would you not be better asking them this? :-)

Hi!

Welcome.

I second the idea that you buy a book or two. Ms. Walstad's is exceptional.
It is oriented toward a low tech, slow growth environment.

Here's a link to a forum that she moderates:
http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/el-natural/. Check the
archives, too.

You will find many opinions here and at other boards. For example, you most
certainly do not

need to add CO2 to have a successful planted aquarium.

Good luck!

Bill
