If you goal is to slow down evaporative loss just buy a set of glass tops that are made to fit your aquarium.  They will slow down evaporation, have a hinged lid so you can easily access the tank for minor maintenance and feeding and can easily be removed when necessary.  Your light fixture will need to breath some or the excess heat will shorten bulb life and can damage the ballast.  There is even a possibility of fire not to mention that your tank will probably have heat issues from the lighting.
