I have never done this. Only after the flower has dried up and withered 
away do I remove the stem.

When the plant gets too crowded, I just pull off leaves to thin it out.

It is one tough plant.

It survived being up rooted (two years ago), transported in a cooler in 
the middle of summer to Casper, WY, and replanted in the same gravel it 
was pulled from.
