I forgot to sign my post above. If you have any other questions about water 
chemistry, there are some good articles at http://www.thekrib.com such as

important typo in this article. The incorrect statement is here: "Carbonate 
Hardness is a confusing term because it does refer to hardness, but rather 
to the alkalinity"  It should say, Carbonate Hardness is a confusing term 
because it does NOT refer to hardness, but rather to the alkalinity. The 
correction is in capitals.
