Shouldn't. In acidic water, carbonate should become bicarbonate. All 
bicarbonate is is carbonate with a hydrogen ion attached. That means 
adding carbonate will eat up some acidity in your tank by taking up free 
H+ ions.

KCO3 + H+ => KHCO3.
