While living on the San Francisco peninsula a number of years ago, I came across Stanford University's "Investment Recovery" store.  It contained all kinds of goodies and I bought a microscope for around $35.00.  Lots of other usable stuff too.  Other schools and school districts probably have similar outlets for their used or replaced goods.
