I have had the same experience with the plant in two of the three tanks  that 
i placed new plants in.ie stem rot and failure to thrive
 
The one tank that the plants have survived for over 6 months and shown some  
growth is in a tank that had some substrate added to the existing flourite 
that  was supposedly made for ciclid tanks with a high buffering factor. it did 
have a  good amount of shell bits mixed in.  Eco complete ciclid i think was 
the  brand.
 
In this tank it is doing well. The only substantial difference between the  
tanks it failed in and the tank it survived in was the substrate. 
WPG ferts CO2 fish load maintenance were all relatively the same..
