It ought to but I think it derives from "tube." The socket names for fluorescent bulbs have less obvious origins:

2G22, 2G13, 2G11 (the "German" 55 watt PC 4-pin in-line arrangement), GX23 (the 2-pion 13 watt PC), G5, G10, G13, G23, etc., 2G7, and "Panasonic" 4-pin square arrangment GY10q, and more and variations on those basic names depending on the type of mounting.

I haven't found out what what the "G" derives from. Probably not gas, since incandescents are gass filled too.
