You can use baking soda if you only want to raise the KH. It dissolves almost instantly, doesn't cloud the water.

The with crushed coral, IMHO, is that it doesn't give a very stable KH -
when you first do a water change there's little to no Ca in the water, and
then as the water runs through the filter the KH rises over time. In my very
soft water I use either Flourish Equilibrium or CaCO3, which has the benefit
of raising both GH and KH but the disadvantage of slow dissolving. I like
the Flourish EQ, but it does get spendy.
