[APD] Coconut mat substrate?

Has anyone used a coconut fiber mat as a substrate?  Apparently this forms
the bottom of Tropica's Aqua Cubes.

I was thinking of getting a 1/4" thick mat from a hydroponics supply house,
cutting it to fit a nano tank then rooting some HC onto it.  I;m guessing
that wouldn't be too dificult if you start with a mat of HC that was grown
emersed, put it on the coconut fiber mat with a water level slightly higher
than the thickness of the mat. A couple of anubias nana petite, a plant for
height and a bit of driftwood would make a nice home for shrimp.

Anyone with experience or with thoughts (or even both experience and
thoughts!) feel free to chime in!
