They are sometimes treated with an algacide, fungicide or both so that they don't get the funky, black, slimy, malodorous, ugly stuff growing in them too soon. And you wonder why you mama told you not to drink out of the new garden hose. ;-) 
 
If a hose is so are treated, the treatment should be noted on the original packaging. In some USA states, such notation is probably required -- in some, such treatment is probably forbidden.

What poison is in green hoses?  I use an ordinary green water hose  
from Home Depot to change water in my tank.  Nothing has died after a  
water change yet.  This is a new one for me.
