[APD] starting

Hello group
My name is chuck and I'm currently in the process of having a cube tank [24x24x25] built and I want to complete it as a planted tank with an array of community fish as well. I built my own cabinet and hood for it and I need some of your input into the completion of this project. I'm new at this; however I did have a 55 gallon done about 10 yrs ago and it looked great, but it didn't survive the divorce.....LOL. Its been that long since my last tank and I want to get involved with it again; but this time, I want it right. The hood will set 13" higher (inside) than the glass top for the tank. Your input would be greatly appreciated. I live in Missouri and finding anything here is a 2 hr drive any direction. Thanks

That IS a swinging price, Terry, but it drops a lot when you figure that
you have 4 lamps to get rid of, unless you are into reef tanks. The
highest Kelvin lamps that I find useful for FW planted tanks is about
6500K. Some 10Ks with an extra high CRI are usable visually, but waste a
bit of energy that could be going to photosynthesis if more output was
at a bit longer wavelengths.

Perhaps they would be willing to substitute some 6500 and 5000K lamps
for the 4 they list? Then it would really be a sweet deal (at least for
those of us not in the Peoples Republic of CA.)

Hi Wright,

Well when I bought the 48 inch version of these (they had 2 daylight and 2
actinic) - I bought replacement lamps as you said - and sold the actinics
to a reefer buddy for about the price I paid for the new daylight
lamps.....so it was a wash. I found the best price for replacement lamps
at Hello lights. So yes you have to figure that into the deal.

Try Ebay for cheap lighting fixates... I have two of the Jebo fixtures and
have had no problems with them. Here is a link...130 watts for $75

While this certainly is a good price, the fixture is only 20" and I wouldn't
think it has enough "light spread" for so large a tank. Having said that,
though, I am unfamiliar with a 140 gallon's dimensions so I'm not sure what
would or would not be appropriate lighting. I'm guessing it's something like
72 x 18 x 28 or so. If this is the case you may want to check out this site
Eli http://www.aquatraders.com . They have very reasonable prices and the
quality of their fixtures is surprisingly high, and there is no DIY involved
they're good to go out of the box. Having said that, there is a caveat
though, their Customer Service is... virtually non-existent. If you click on
the "Contacts" link you'll find... nothing. If you search hard enough you
will find an e-mail address, but having personally sent them 3 e-mails with
zero replies, it is probably a lost cause trying to contact them.
This is of course directly opposite of AHSupply's customer service which is
excellent. But since you want inexpensive you may want to at least look
there.

Wow, these are incredible prices! How on earth can they afford to sell a
260w fixture for $100, lamps included? Kinda sounds a bit suspect to me,
but then I'm generally very suspicious of everything. You've ordered from
them before? Are they legit?

I can only relay my experience. I purchased 2 - 48 inch - 210 watt Jebo
fixtures from an ebay vendor and paid $65 for each. I have had no problems
with the product and am pleased at the value - my tanks look great. I shop
on ebay frequently and have had problems with a vendor only one time - and
it was resolved to my satisfaction. How does anybody on ebay sell for so
low - often people are buying close out lots. I can't really say - but
there are bargains there to be found. There are also overpriced items - as
anything it's always buyer beware. I only offer it up as an alternative
source to somebody who was looking for a bargain.

Ebay has a system of feedback which you can check on any vendor before you
purchase. There are so many vendors on ebay I can only give general advice
on using ebay. First - use a credit card for any purchase. Vendor doesn't
take a card payment....don't use vendor. The dispute process available
through your credit card is something you do not want to give up. You can
use paypal and have paypal charge your credit card also.........this gives
you a lot of dispute protection. Don't buy anything cash only. Don't buy
anything that is more expensive than you can afford to lose if the deal is a
fraud. Also check the shipping cost - some vendors sell and item on the
cheap then try to charge some large "handling" fee to make up for it.
That's the best ebay advice I can give. I'm careful and have had 99% good
experiences using ebay.

Great. Nice lights and they do ones for a 12" and 24" tank.
But typically I need one for a 18" long tank! Worse luck.

Lots of individuals seem to be buying large amounts of trade fish food and
sell it in small packets. So it works out cheaper for the private aquarist.

In the UK the Government is said to be thinking of adding a eBay Tax...
eBay *is* very popular over here.

I just bought a 200g bag of Tetra PRO colour fish food for ?3.

I think Google Base may give eBay a run for their money. ;-)

Stuart you are a googler.

I also advise anybody to try www.Froogle.com - it will search for the lowest
price on items. I use this often also to make sure I don't pay too much on
ebay - or be tempted to overbid.

I use http://froogle.google.co.uk/
;-)

But if Google Base remains free I can't see why people would continue to use
eBay?

Time will tell.
