[APD] [Off-Topic] Supplementing Electricity with Solar

There seem to be a few electricians on the list, and I have an 
electrical question tangentially to planted tanks. I want to know if it 
is possible to supplement the power on a circuit with solar power. In 
other words, if I am running 500W of lighting on a circuit, can I hook 
up 200W worth of solar panel and decrease my effective consumption to 
300W, or do I have to supply the entire circuit from the solar array's 
inverter and switch between mains and solar depending on the output of 
the solar panels?
