You know, if you put a lid on the DIY sump, you've got a do it yourself canister, and no gurgles down the drain ;-)

Canisters were always too pricey for me too.  Plus, I like to DIY,
that's why I always build sumps for my tanks.  Plus, I like to be able
to dose and fiddle with equipment without taking off the top.
