Ah ha. I hadn't thought of it that way. I just was thinking in terms of 
habitat-specific when I was thinking of what constitutes natural (kinda 
like putting sea shells in a goldfish tank). I was under the impression 
that black sand/gravel is of fairly limited occurrence, especially in 
freshwater habitats.
