What is language if it is not symbolic communication? There has been a 
lot of fascinating studies about communication among animals. A very 
recent study learned that chickadees not only warn other chickadees of 
predators with their calls, but tell them what kind of predator, and how 
dangerous they are.

Anyway, all of that is moot. Children before about 18 months have no 
language, and yet they remain human somehow. Even persons with severe 
brain damage (Terri Schiavo anyone?) who can no longer communicate at 
all are still human, are they not?
