You mean, for example, the ports on the regulator where a
pressure meter connects, etc? Yep, those are tapered and
the threads are what provide the seal. A little thread dope
is recommended. You can use tape if (and by "if" what I
really mean is "IF") you are fastidious about keeping it
away from the initial threads upon first assembly and
cleaning out the threads thoroughly after dissasembly and
before reassembly.

I suspect that it would be very costly to machine those
ports into the regulator carcass if they had to seal with
compression or face-to-face fittings.

My comment about parallel threads was regarding the CGA 320
connection, the one where the regulator meets the tank
valve, asssuming one is following CGA prescriptions.
