Since you mention that it should be in a place of low to moderate water
condition, I think that may be my problem.  Mine is in direct path of my
overflow return, so it is constantly moving, and that might be the problem.
Maybe micro particles or even just small ones that are coming out of the
overflow are shooting holes in the leaves causing a spot for a new plant to
grow also.  I don't have any other place to point my return for now so I
guess I will just have to live the smaller clumpy looking java fern.
However in retrospect I kinda like the small ball like form that has grown
in place on the driftwood.
