[APD] Alternate Schedule Refugiums for the Planted Tank

I was very interested in this about a year ago but then forgot about it 
for awhile. i've seen alot more about it lately. The concept supposedly 
is to run a sump alternate to the main tank  filled with nutrient loving 
plants, snails, and shrimp. to run that sump in the hours that the main 
tank is dark, and vice versa. the theory is that the sump will keep the 
system more balanced both in regards to respiration and stats like ph, 
but also overall health. I havent seen anyone claim great success, but 
then i've only seen a very few people even using the system and not for 
very long. thought i would ask here and see if anyone had good links or 
insight.
