I'm ready to do the same, but I am using strips of about 1/16th inch thick clear acrylic plastic - the same as is used for picture frame glass. I got it from the local hardware store and cut strips the width I want the depth of the terraces to be. It is very springy and will break if you bend it too far, so I used a butane torch to heat it until I could bend it and have it stay that way. This is not a safe way to work with acrylic - it can catch fire easily, gives of fumes, and just isn't the way to do it. (But, it works)
