 If Scott is correct -- and he usually is -- that LED's are about as 
efficient as fluorescents in terms of light production, then they produce 
the same amount of heat per watt as a fluorescent. A 3W bulb (whether 
fluorescent, incandescent, or LED) is converting 3W of energy into light and 
waste heat. All the energy that isn't going into making light is producing 
heat. Higher light production means less energy wasted as heat.
