Re: [APD] Re: Sunlight in a tube - Solar Power

A couple of things to remember.

1. My average power use WAS ~490KWH a month. This was when it was just over $100 a month.
2. My average power use NOW is ~690KWH a month. That's about a 41% increase. I even had one part of last year that was averaging nearly 1000KWH for the month.

Using round numbers, assume $140 a month (Except all of this would be above baseline so it's actually much higher).

$140x12=$1680. Take out the $230 and it's $1450.

Am I making any money on this? I don't really care. It's a cool conversation piece and we have a lot less heartburn about using appliances when we want.

Oh yeah...we also spent $8k on all new double-insulated vinyl windows. And added an attic fan that kicks in when the attic is over 100F.

We do our best to keep our day to day costs down by planning ahead.

So, rounded, a savings of about $1000 a year?

"So...realized price was about $13500 but $16000 out of pocket."

$16,000 invested at a mediocre return of 10% is $1600 a year.

Not bad, it's getting closer to break-even. Plus you get to run the hot tub and AC, so there's that.

We installed photovoltaic on our new convention center addition and the return rate was negative, but -somebody- has to get it started was the justification. Hate to say it though, but our (Austin, TX) cheapest electricity is nuclear, and we tried like hell to sell our share of that facility. We -really- need to get going on the fusion thang...
