I'll the opposite tack - for me Anubias nana and it's variants (crinkled,
white-splashed or streaked, petite nana) all do much better with the roots
in an enriched substrate.  Attached to wood or rock it maintains and grows
glacially. With the roots but not the rhizome in the substrate it still is
not a fast grower, but several times the rate of that when effective
anchored in the water column.  It also blooms regularly, which I take as a
sign of heath.
