toh, tempered is more likely to shatter if it breaks at
all, while nontempered glass is much more likely to just
crack. Cracked glass is much easier to deal with than glas
that shatters when broken.

Probably a good point. Much easier to extract two big chunks of glass from the tank than a hundred little pieces :-)



Special heat/temperature tolerant glass (borosilicate liek
Pyrex, etc.) would be less likely to shatter with a sudden
temp change but will be very expensive and often what is
available in thicknesses greater 1/16th" is slightly
off-color.

Pyrex is *expensive*. Tends to be yellowish too, although I suppose one could compensate for that by using a higher color temperature bulb. Maybe a 10000K would appear to be a 6700K after going through 1/8" of Pyrex? Hmm...
