[APD] Re: Aquatic-Plants Digest, Vol 15, Issue 19

Dear Elaine,

I'm glad that you asked the question before buying. The plant you asked about is related to Ophiopogon japonica, but is a different species. Take note of how I spelled Ophiopogon as you spelled it incorrectly in your post. I'm not a stickler for spelling, its just that unless you spell it right it won't come up in a web search. By the way, in terms of "will it or won't it survive in the aquarium" the variety name isn't important, so any information you find on the species should be relevant (not necessarily correct in all cases though!).

Consider this plant to be the same as O. japonica for aquarium purposes. In other words don't buy it if you want a plant that can survive underwater. I'm almost certain this goes for everything in the genus.

Before buying any more plants and discovering that they will only live submerged for a few months(you would think the stores would know this) I am looking for information on yet another plant. I've checked out the 4 sites I normally use (tropica, dennerle acquaplant and Paul's aquatic plants) and Baensch's and have come up with zip...something close but not this exact plant. ophiopogen jaburan (varigated) I found ophiopogen japonicus....but that isn't the same thing is it? I thought not as the Aquaplant site had a listing for both. Any light you can shed on the mystery would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Elaine
