I've used several Rubbermaid 35 gallon containers to raise daphnia and other
foods outside for more than five years.  I've never had a problem, even
though they freeze
almost solid in the winter.

A question:  Wouldn't fertilizer added to the reservoir cause algae and
other problems, since it would have little light?  Or would the light level
be so low that even algae wouldn't grow (if that is possible)?
