[APD] Re: Aquatic-Plants Digest, Vol 14, Issue 10

Dude just use seachem acid buffer...what you do is take the ph of you tap and dose a 5 gallon bucket of your tap to get the required ph that you want...once you figure the dosage per 5 gallons it is all downhill from there...and if you want you can but tetra blackwater extract...that is all i do for my tank aand my tank is F*$#ing awesome....no fancy smancy co2 injection or anything like that....

ok - when I do a water change will I need to "pre soak" it with a bit

No, if you follow my suggestion, then you are putting peat into your substrate. What you are proposing sounds like no peat in the substrate or in the tank but instead soaking your water change water in peat. This is bad because it removes minerals from your water change water that you want. Also you do not have the benefit of CO2 generation from decomposition in the aquarium. I could tell you how to extract organic acids from peat but I think you need to consider the pH problem in another light. Rising pH is a symptom of something else.

I'm using flourish excel for co2...

I can't & won't comment on Flourish Excel; this is a commercial product. Perhaps you can talk with Greg Morin of SeaChem.

Your lighting is moderately high so I would recommend you to inject CO2
as a gas. If your pH is rising, its a symptom of insufficient CO2 in
your water and the plants are using biogenic decalcification. If you
have sufficient CO2 in your system, then don't obsess about the pH as
long as it stays constant. If it doesn't stay constant but rises to 10
or 11, you need gaseous CO2 injection.

pH shift does not hurt fish. Variation in dissolved minerals is what causes osmotic shock. Your tap water is fine just right out of the tap because it has plenty of Ca and Mg in it. If you change water regularly, you won't have a problem with a 50% water change. This puts a lot of cold water in the tank however this is also not a serious problem for the fish. If you have a lot of fresh peat in the tank, you might want to change water weekly since your water will be yellow and probably low in minerals until the peat CEC is saturated with Ca & Mg.

I have 18 beautiful, large Cryptocoryne Balansae I just pulled from my
aquarium that I'd like to ship off.

You'll get all 18, no less (not separate packages).

$6.00 shipping.

First one to respond with a mailing address gets em! I will send them on
Thursday, standard shipping, so hopefully you are in a cooler climate so
they survive the weekend.

it sounds like you may be confused somehow as to what my problem is.
My pH does not rise (at least that I have noticed). It's just too
high to start with (from tap water) It's fine for my more hardy fish
that I have already but is not the ideal for some of the more fragile
fish I want to get, like cardinal tetras.

I was intending to put some peat in the filter for the constant supply
as I am not really sure how to get peat into the substrate of an
already established tank (although I would consider that too if you
have any good suggestions). I just wanted to know how important it
would be for my change water to be the same pH as the tank since I
don't want to shock my fishes badly with every water change.

Once again I want to thank you for your advice since it is actually
useful :)

should've read all posts before I replied.

I didn't know this and it's contrary to most of what I have read
online - people are always talking about being careful of pH shifts.
Is that mainly because high ph is usually associated with harder water
and vice versa?

Anyway I think I am getting a pretty good idea what I will do with my
tank once I am done treating for ich and start doing regular water
changes again. (my medication recommends not to change water for the
course of treatment)

My tank is usually not much warmer than room temp (the house is generally kept in the low 70s and the tank is set to mid/high 70s)

It sounds as if I should be able to adjust my tank to 6.8 pretty easily contrary to my initial impression :) I don't mind not having precise control.

Well I will try to keep down to one reply on topic after this :)

thanks, ~anna

Keep in mind that most water treatment plants intentionally drive out most
of the CO2 in the water in order to reduce corrosion in the pipe system. Our
water comes out of the tap at pH 9.0, but if it sits for a day in an open
container it will stabilize by itself at pH 7.6 as it takes on CO2 from the
atmosphere. Our water is about average in terms of hardness and the commonly
recommended CO2 bubble rate of one bubble per second per 40 gallons of tank
water yields a final pH of about 7.0. Test your tapwater pH after it has
been out of the tap for a while to get a true reading.
