[APD] Re: CF and other myths

Regarding CF lighting and bulb life: run them till they die.
Got bulbs 2-3 years old? Want new ones? Send me your old ones.
Mine are 4-6 years old.
They have some decay over time, but this should not affect the growth of plants, unless you are well below 2w/gal, your plants are NOT light limited.

You might be use to dosing higher amounts of NO3 etc at higher lighting, but this dosing will not influence the decay, uptake will go down, but the increase in leftover nutrients in most cases should be insignificant.

If you do not believe this to be true, then you are suggesting that excess Fe, PO3, NO3 etc cause algae.

Light drives the system, more lighting can be bad, less is fine since it does not place more demand on the nutrient loading in a tank, it produces less demand.

Many folks add a lot of light on their tanks, believing the myth that more light is better and will give you redder coloration and the ability to grow Riccia and Gloss etc well, this is simply put: a myth.

If you are barely eeking by with 1.5w/gal of NO FL's, then replacing the bulbs every 6 month can help. But the red color and the plant species issue are myths that have been handed down over the last 10 years and are still being perpetuated.
A lot has changed since then and a great deal more understanding of what is going on has been uncovered in the last 15 years or so.

It'd help everyone by challenging these myths rather going along with them.
