I use a combination of the top trimming and replanting the bottoms, depending. I find that after several times of just trimming the tops (how many depends on the type of plant) the bottoms tend to lose their leaves and look bad. When that happens, I cut off the bottoms & replant the tops. I think that the article about Amano's trimming methods mentioned doing this as well.
