I never noticed any discomfort in my fish, but the green hydra I had 
to deal with stayed pretty small.  The largest I ever saw was just 
over 1/4" (6mm) including its tentacles.  I suspect my regular use of 
a diatom filter at the time kept their food supply limited, and they 
died off after a few months.  I've heard of hydras as long as 1/2" 
(13mm) minus the tentacles, so it's not hard to believe they could 
cause trouble.
