[APD] Re: Lost an oto, not sure why
Michael,
I forgot something that Roger Miller's post on chloride reminded me
of -- the addition of chloride salts (NaCl, KCl, etc.) can help
alleviate nitrite toxicity. The chloride anions compete with nitrite
at the gill membrane. That's why brackish and saltwater fish aren't
very susceptible to nitrite toxicity.
I don't recall what the dosage should be, but you can probably find
plenty of info on the Web. Check nitrite toxicity and brown blood
disease. When adding a salt, build it up slowly to allow the fish
time to acclimate.
