I forgot something that Roger Miller's post on chloride reminded me 
of -- the addition of chloride salts (NaCl, KCl, etc.) can help 
alleviate nitrite toxicity.  The chloride anions compete with nitrite 
at the gill membrane.  That's why brackish and saltwater fish aren't 
very susceptible to nitrite toxicity.

I don't recall what the dosage should be, but you can probably find 
plenty of info on the Web.  Check nitrite toxicity and brown blood 
disease.  When adding a salt, build it up slowly to allow the fish 
time to acclimate.
